2009 Select AFL Champions — Sealed Box Overview
This was Select's first series of the 2009 AFL season, released in March 2009 with an RRP of $2.99 per pack. The box configuration is:
- 8 cards per pack, 36 packs per box, 12 boxes per case
- Each pack contains 7 base cards plus 1 holographic guernsey die-cut card
- The complete base set runs to 195 cards — 192 player cards across 16 AFL teams plus 3 checklist cards
Insert Sets in the Box
The 2009 Champions release included these insert series: Guernsey Diecut cards (1 per pack), Gold Foil Signatures (4 from each club), Draft Rookie cards (the top 16 picks from the 2008 AFL Draft), Star Gem (2 leading players from each club), Superstar Mascot Gem (one superstar per club), and Double Trouble — an acetate card pairing two players from 6 clubs.
The Rookie Cards (Draft Rookie Subset)
This is the key chase set most collectors care about. The Draft Rookie subset is a 16-card subset randomly inserted in the 2009 Select AFL Champions series featuring the top 16 draft picks from the 2008 National Draft — a popular limited edition set.
Important clarification on terminology: these are labelled "Draft Rookie" cards (DR1–DR16) but feature the 2008 draft class, not 2009. That's because the 2009 Champions release came out in March 2009, before the 2009 draft happened. Notable players from the 2008 draft who appear in this subset include:
- Jack Ziebell (DR9) — North Melbourne, went on to be a long-term captain
- Nic Naitanui — West Coast (pick 2), one of the most marketable players of his era
- Stephen Hill — Fremantle (pick 3)
- Daniel Rich — Brisbane (pick 7)
- Hamish Hartlett — Port Adelaide (pick 4)
- Ayce Cordy (DR14) — Western Bulldogs
The Naitanui and Ziebell cards tend to hold the strongest collector value from this subset given their careers.
Worth Noting
If you're chasing big-name 2009 draft class rookies (Dustin Martin, Dyson Heppell era), they wouldn't appear until the 2010 Select releases — Champions 2009 is too early for them.
A sealed, factory-secured box of this product is becoming harder to find in genuinely untouched condition, so verify the security seal before purchasing — Select boxes use a tamper-evident seal that should be intact.
